For the second year in a row, Bloomfield College’s Men’s BasketballWomen’s Basketball, and Women’s Softball teams volunteered on September 2, 2017, at the third annual Spread the Purple 5K run.

Spread the Purple is a nonprofit organization founded in 2006 that strives to make a difference in the community. Their mission is to provide guidance to both individuals and families for the right resources and assistance they can use during unexpected circumstance. For example, Spread the Purple benefits those locally who cannot afford to heat their homes in the winter months.

One of the ways the Foundation is able to continue assisting those in need is through fundraisers, such as the 5K Run.

The Bloomfield College athletes volunteered as course attendants and other positions around the racecourse to ensure a smooth event.

“This is a great cause that helps our local community,” said head softball coach, Ashton Corley. “The teams did a great job this year and were asked to come back again next year. They do a great job representing their specific athletic programs and the Bloomfield College Athletics Department as a whole. As NCAA Division II student-athletes, they all have very busy schedules, so, it was great seeing them out there on one of their few free weekends before their non-championship seasons begin. As a department, we try to send a message that community engagement is vital to success on, and off, the field.”

As a NCAA Division II institution, Bloomfield College athletics is devoted to community engagement and it is a vital part of the student athlete experience. The department is committed to the belief that integrating community engagement into game days, championship events, and off-campus events is a huge part of what it means to be a student-athlete. Bloomfield College’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee is devoted to offering many community engagement events to the entire athletics’ student body.
